We at Urban Light are very saddened by the loss of ULM Board Secretary Delvin Harshaw. What a servant’s heart! He was dearly loved, and will be missed. I first met Delvin in 1996 when he interviewed me for a personality profile story for the Springfield News-Sun. I was taken in by his genuine interest in my personal testimony, journey, and mission. We became good friends.
Delvin could always be counted upon to give of his time and talent for the cause. Not only ours, but many local causes. A ULM board member since 1998, Delvin was not content to merely attend board and committee meetings. He got involved directly. Whether serving at ULM’s annual Golf Scramble, Fundraising Gala or other activity, he was always there with a jovial spirit.
Since it’s creation five years ago, Delvin has served as Chair of the Marketing and PR committee for Father Fest, our community’s annual celebration of fatherhood. He leaves big shoes to fill. But, we don’t even hope to ever replace his joyful, selfless spirit. Cynthia, Delvin’s wife of 43 years says “He just liked serving. He didn’t want to be paid for anything. He just wanted to serve and make other people’s lives better.” A 1963 graduate of North High School, he is also survived two sons, Delvin Jr. and Sean, five grandchildren and a grandchild. Our loss is heaven’s gain.
